Deep in the Darkness

Into the hole
black as night.
Pants too short,
boots too tight.

The money is good,
too good to end it.
Now if I
could have time to spend it.

Hacking and digging
Deeper and deeper
Steel liner-plate
keeps out the reaper

Shovels and hammers
work to the beat.
Young men a slaving,
an old man with sore feet.

Through the darkness
an eye-piercing light.
Like a laser
cuts through the night

Daylight floods in
That's the most fun.
We made it through
our work here is done.

Through heat of Summer
and cold of the snow
The hole is comfy,
we're off to Reno.

The Sun beats down,
I hate its harshness.
The new pit is ready,
back to the darkness.
